Digital photography is the use of digital cameras featuring multiple arrays of photodiodes to make digital images, rather than an exposure on film, focused by a fixed lens. The captured images are stored in a computer file and then either available to be viewed, printed, or saved for later digital processing, online publishing, or simple digital printing. Today, digital photography has advanced to the point where most digital cameras have the capability of either capturing, editing, and displaying images in ways that weren’t possible just several years ago. Many consumers rely heavily on their digital camera when taking their vacation because they can easily check their vacation pictures to see what scenery they’ll be seeing during their next trip.
There are two main categories of digital photography: digital single lens reflex (SLR) and full frame (Focal) photography. The former employs a mirror to capture light and send it through the lens in one smooth motion, which is how most traditional photographic film is made. The latter utilizes a sensor to detect light and focus on it, usually with a very large sensor that can provide very high resolution (highlighted areas are automatically lightened). SLR uses complex algorithms to ensure that everything is done at the highest level possible, which is why it’s so expensive.
However, this type of photography has certain advantages over traditional film photography. For one thing, you can take tons more photographs with a digital camera. Since there are no additional chemicals needed to process the film, it’s possible to make thousands of great images using a relatively small amount of film. There’s also the matter of long exposure times. With traditional film photography, images can take up to an hour or more to develop. With digital photography, you can snap a photograph within a second.
However, there are some disadvantages to digital photography as well. One of the most noticeable disadvantages is that colors tend to be washed out or bleached. Even so, this hasn’t stopped the progression of digital photography; many professionals continue to develop printing techniques for use with digital cameras. As well, the advantages of the medium have continued to evolve, giving hobbyist photographers the ability to capture the true essence of natural world wonders like sunset landscapes or sunsets.
Digital photo prints can be ordered at any local retail store, from home to professional studios. They are usually less expensive than comparable prints printed photos from paper. It’s also possible to purchase prints from online sites, although these tend to be quite limited in size due to the limitations of digital processing. Since they are electronically reproduced, they may be different than prints from physical print companies. Also, due to the complexity of digital processing, it can take several days before a photograph appears on your screen.
One of the main articles in this series is “Solving the Photography Problem”. In this series, we’ve discussed about the growing need for images on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. We also discussed about the image quality of digitally captured photographs, their limited storage space and deteriorating image quality as soon as the pictures are printed. Now we’ll take a look at some of the methods you might use to make your digital photography as beautiful as possible.
Digital photography uses film, rather than a digital camera, so it has certain inherent limitations that other digital photography uses don’t have. One of the biggest limitations is the time it will take to develop a picture after it has been taken. Film takes significantly longer to develop than digital photography.
Another major disadvantage of digital photography is that it doesn’t give you a great deal of flexibility when composing shots. You can’t change your position during a photo shoot. For example, if you wanted to take a photograph of a front yard in the morning, but didn’t want to disturb the neighborhood, you might want to position yourself so the front yard appeared as a seamless straight line in the center of your picture. However, if you do change your position during the photo shoot, you will need to re-finder the view to get a correct shot and you might miss an important landmark that you would have appreciated, if not for the fact that you weren’t positioned properly during the shoot. Digital cameras use light sensitive sensors to detect light, so they don’t require as much studio time as many of the other types of cameras.
